Raising Awareness of HIV Risk and Risk Prevention Methods in Indonesia (2000- 2002) - CPI partnered with the National HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care Program funded by AusAID to support the Indonesian Government to develop national communication campaigns to raise awareness of the risks of HIV infection and risk prevention methods. An extensive consultation process was embarked upon in a number of island provinces with stakeholders consulted on communication needs and resources. A management committee was established comprised of Government representatives, donors, implementing agencies and community program stakeholders, to oversee the program development.

A comprehensive campaign was developed incorporating HIV/AIDS television, radio and print announcements, as well as nationwide distribution of a community based publication series. A unique element of the program developed as a result of stakeholder dialogue and communication pre-testing was the use of ambient media in the form of toilet/washroom posters in high risk settings such as bars and clubs in Jakarta.

The evaluation survey developed by CPI required contracting of a local research agency and training of field workers to conduct research with a sample of over 2000 respondents nationwide. Post campaign survey results showed significant increases in beneficiary awareness and knowledge on HIV transmission particularly from sharing of injecting needles and other modes of transmission, as well as knowledge of the key means of HIV prevention.
